Maintenance - SAVE $1,000 a year

Maintenance . . .NOT that exciting, But it’s where to start!!! If you (and teach your kids to do this too) do an annual maintenance on all your cars, buy a bunch of supplies and plan a full Saturday, start at the top, you’ll save a $1,000 a year over your lifetime in unnecessary car repair and replacement. We have many customers that get 15 years and 300,000 miles out of a car. My daily driver has over 240,000 miles and my “new car” I bought used with 100,000 on it. I don’t have highway breakdowns, only 1 in 30 years and no major emergency repairs. But I also fix it first. Let’s start with our Saturday Morning Annual Maintenance:

Tools Needed-

~a $79.95 Sears Metric tool set

~a floor jack, again $49 will get a good one for the backyard mechanic.  Sure it will be made in China, but it will work.

~a pair of jack stands

~a big sheet of cardboard to lay on under the car.

The Start-

~Go to the 25 cent  car wash and steam clean your engine area.

~Take your jack, lift up the front end and do the front suspension too.

Annual Check-Up - All Oil and Filters

Change all the filters at least once a year.  Why not the first Saturday in June each year!!  Like clockwork!  Oil filters should be changed at an absolute!! minimum of twice a year and every 5,000 miles.  Most “100,000 milers” change their oil every 3,000 miles.  Always change the oil filter at the same time.

BELT KITS

Belts drive everything - water pump, alternator, power steering to name a few.  If one breaks you are parked on the side of the road for a $7.00 belt or worse yet...overheated.

Belts don’t last forever. The “Book” says “inspect the Belts”; well unless its about to grenade, it’s very hard to tell if it will go in the next year or not. My suggestion, pick a number, 60,000 miles, 5 years or 70,000 or 80,000 but pick a reasonable number and stick to it!. If this is your year (or if you just bought a used car) replace ALL the BELTS. The “shop labor” to replace one Belt is maybe an hour, but to replace them ALL (Our Kits) is the same labor. Do them all and save on the repeated labor costs.
