Change your oil yourself or go to a 10 minute lube? This is the $20 question, or is it? Why change your oil just to save $20?Well, it gets you under the car! And, you may see something which if you catch it now will save you time and money later! When changing my oil last fall I noticed a brake hose had come loose and was starting to rub on the disc. Another 1,000 miles and I’d have had no brakes! All I did was push the brake hose grommet back into the clip and it was done! Did it save me a $2,000 accident? A $10 brake line? Would the oil change guy have seen it? Would that line have gone bad at the wrong moment?

Besides all the “what-ifs,” I actually like doing it! Just because others consider it work, I don’t. That’s why I change my own oil.

AIR FILTERS

Air filters take the dirt out of the air! Elementary!  If you’re only going to keep your car until it reaches 50,000 miles, don’t even bother changing it, but if you want to be a member of the 100, 200 or 300,000 mile club, read on! Aside from the visible dirt, leaves, sand and dust you can see blowing in the wind, there’s dirt in the air. Unless you filter the air, the dirt gets into your engine.

Your VW® “drinks” about a quart of air/per cylinder/per revolution or 2,500 gallons per  minute at 5,000 rpm. If the air cycling through your car has .000001% of dirt in it, that’s a cup of dirt per year going into your engine. Would you throw a cup of dirt into the engine of your car?

The dirt gets between your piston rings and the walls, wears them out, and there goes your compression. First quality air filters can add 100,000 miles between re-ringing, not to mention that some dirt gets by the rings and ends up in the oil and then in the bearings.

Bosch Kayser - OEM GAS FUEL FILTERS

Replace your car’s fuel filter every six months or every 10,000 miles to protect its fuel system from dirt and rust. Gas fuel-injection systems don’t like dirt, water or solvents. Make sure you buy good gas. A batch of bad gas can clog the system, and the VW dealer’s typical solution is to remove the injectors, the gas tank, (and everything in-between) and replace them with new parts. We have seen estimates of $1600. A clean fuel filter helps. 

DIESEL FUEL FILTERS

Diesel fuel is sprayed at 1,500/psi through a pin-sized hole. If the fuel is dirty, it erodes the ends of the injectors making a crater a few thousandths of an inch deep.  This causes injection problems and your diesel shakes and starts hard. You can buy 15 filters for the price of one new set of injectors. Why don’t you change the filters regularly and avoid the cost of injectors.
