STRUTS

All Rabbits, Sciroccos, Dashers, Jettas and Golfs use a McPherson Strut front suspension. The front shocks on a Rabbit, Scirocco, Dasher, Jetta, Golf, etc., are called struts by mechanics. The strut (shock) is inside the coil springs and is a principal part of the front suspension. In fact, it holds up the car. The front struts usually last somewhere from 50,000-75,000 miles depending on driving conditions.

To replace the strut, you have to take the spring and strut assembly off the car and then disassemble them.

Sometimes all you need is a strut insert.  When you have it apart, you should inspect the upper strut bearing (or strut mount) (see more info below) and see if your springs are weak. Don't replace things unnecessarily, but maybe you should replace the entire unit as an assembly. We can help you either way. The entire strut assembly can be taken off with 4 bolts with no special tools.

To take the strut out of the assembly, you buy a spring compressor.

SHOCK SNUBBERS

When changing the struts, always replace the rubber snubber stop. When the front strut bottoms out, it is cushioned by this snubber and chances are 99% that your snubbers went first, causing your inserts to bang together and wear out. Germ­an.

We sell strut inserts (shocks) for all VWs.

Many times, all you need is just the insert. Place them into your old strut tubes, reassemble them with new snubbers, and you're done! It is reasonable in price and easily done.

These strut inserts are top quality German Boge/Sachs parts. There is no need to purchase the ‘Super’ or ‘Gas’ inserts also listed herein — we don't sell ‘good-better-best’  These are the best inserts for non-racing applications, the highest quality made.  The Super, Turbo-Gas, or Sports-Handling kits are for those who want a racing or sport ride. The quality of workmanship is equally good. The racing ride is just different; firmer, stiffer, and harsher, giving more control under the extremes of hard and sharp cornering. TIP: Using a spring compressor is frightening to some people. You can avoid this scary spring compression bit by buying a complete strut assembly, including spring, strut, bearing, and strut housing, already assembled. Then strut replacement becomes removing and replacing two little bolts on the top, and the two big bolts holding the strut to the spindle.  Any “Shade tree Mechanic” can handle this in an hour. If you're really fast, you could do it in 30 minutes. Always state year and model when ordering. These assemblies are sold in pairs only.
