We are told, but haven’t wrecked a trans-mission just to prove it, that all 4 tires must be the same size. That means if the two back tires wear out you will need 4 new tires.  It’s said the coupling winds up and up and up and finally destroys a trans if the number of rotations are different over a long drive. I don’t believe it but I wouldn’t tempt the devil. My Syncro has all alike tires.

The Syncro Vanagon shares most of it’s components with the ‘86-92 Vanagon. There are some differences, transmissions and front end drive parts of course, plus suspension springs, brakes, air cleaners and the front engine pipe. The engine parts are the same as the 1986-92 2100cc Vanagon with the exception of the air filter and front head exhaust pipe.

The Syncro is a great vehicle in many ways great visibility.  Our camper was great for our trip in the Rockies two summers ago. Although I do admit it could use a few more horsepower on the “Jeep Trail” around Telluride, Ovray and Silverton Colorado.  We had to stop and kick quite a few big rocks out of way before we could make it. What the heck, it gave us more time to enjoy the high country.

Vanagon Diesel (‘82-83)

is a unique vehicle, its life started as an urban delivery van in Europe. To drive 50 miles a day within a city making 20 stops, it was great. Then someone said, “Let’s make a camper!” Problem, American cities are more than 50 miles apart.

The Diesel Vanagons comfortable top speed is approximately 60-65 m.p.h. Many people on vacation like to slow down in a Vanagon camper. The diesel camper is the perfect vehicle to make you slow down. It will last forever at 55 m.p.h. At 75 m.p.h., it will just barely go 75 down a long hill, it turning over 5000 RPM and Mr. Diesel - Does Not Like It. If you drive 75 don’t buy a diesel Vanagon or you’ll be buying a new engine every two years. Don’t take the Diesel Vanagon if you know you are not going to stay within the speed limits.

I have a spotless Vanagon Diesel camper in my barn, the engine was blown. A young kid bought it from a German couple who had it for 11 years. The kid blew it up the first week. I’m going to rebuild it when I retire and can go slower, we plan a trip from Alaska to South America.

The Diesel camper is similar to the ‘84 water cooled Vanagon in most respects. Therefore, you can find the parts list under the ‘83 Watercooled - except for certain items. The engine parts are almost all common to a ‘83 Jetta Diesel, the most notable exceptions are the injection pump, motor mounts, oil pan, oil pump, clutch & pressure plate, exhaust manifold, down pipe, muffler and tail pipe. Below are listed most parts which are specific to the Vanagon Diesel, if you have any questions - ASK!
