Alternators are basically all the same except how they
mount, i.e. the spacing of the bolt holes and how far the
pulley sticks out of the front. These changes are made to
accommodate air conditioning, diesel engines, etc. The
electrons made by all alternators are the same and almost
all VW
®
/Audi
®
alternators are 65 or 90 amps. (Take this
form out to your car with a 6-inch ruler and a pencil.)

How to Buy an Alternator
Tell us the year, model, type of engine and with or without air condition-
ing. On pre-‘85 models refer to selection guide to determine your exact
configuration.
*Some “NEW" models reuse outer casings due to availability. ALL internal components

have three basic dif-
ferences. Mounting.
They are either 90
degree mount or an
180 degree mount, or
90 degree plus one,

99.9% of all VWs

before 1985 use the 3-prong
connector for the main electrical connections on
the back of the alternator. 99% of all ‘85-90 VWs
®
use studs with nut connectors.
