[6] Fuel Distributor,
meters the fuel out to the four injectors. Its
controlled by a pin which is lifted by the arm
of the air flow. The higher the arm, the higher
the pin, the more fuel. These don't wear out,
they just get plugged up with junk and dirt.
The "Bentley Man-manuals" show how to
clean them, but your chances of success are
less than 50/50. Our recycled units are 100%
fine, and assuming you get rid of the bad fuel
and junk, they should last 500,000 miles.
P.S. Don't disassemble the fuel distribu-
tor... no gaskets are available!
Changing the fuel distributor is a job you can
do yourself! There are multiple models of fuel
distributors-when you call, give year and
engine size. We can supply you with a reman-
ufactured unit at significant savings off the
BOSCH list price.

There is an in-tank "pre-pump" transfer pump on
many models. It is part of the fuel sender and
accessed from under the plate under the back seat.

[2] The Main Fuel Pump
must deliver approximately 70PSI. The gas runs
through the pump and cools and lubricates the pump.
They last only about 80,000 miles so if your car does
not start when the car is hot, the so-called "Hot Start,"
there's an 80% chance it's the [2] Fuel Pump. Our
pumps are BOSCH. Be careful, others sell some junk
brands.

Note: We have recently found a reliable remanufacturer of
fuel pumps. It’s a family business, and they have been
rebuilding electrical components for over 30 years.
[ 7] CIS Injectors
,
are pretty simple...they just spray gas
continuously into the intake just above the valve. They are mechan-
ical (nothing electrical) and are designed to open at approximately
60PSI. There is a spring and ball check valve which have tiny pas-
sages and consequently get clogged. Cleaning is impossible.
Injectors, good used recycled ones are fine; add REC to the part
number. Tech Tip: You can check the spray pattern of injectors in
the CIS/CIS-E fuel systems. First, carefully remove all 4 injectors
from the cylinder head with the injector removal tool (#SN3509),
being sure to leave the injectors connected to the hard, braided lines.
Place injectors in a small coffee can for safekeeping. Then remove
the large rubber boot over the air-flow sensor (next to the fuel dis-
tributor), have a helper turn the ignition switch to the “on" position,
and finally, lift the air-flow sensor plate with a pair of pliers and
watch the spray pattern coming out of the injectors. Gas will be
spraying out, so be sure to have the injectors in a container to pre-
vent accidental ignition. The spray from each injector should be a
fine, cone-shaped mist. If not, you may need (a) new injector(s).
This test does not work on Digifant/Motronic injectors. They are
electronic and “pulse" in response to a signal from the computer. To
test these, use the procedure in the Bentley Manual.
