engines typically have 2 water necks(Black
Plastic) on the cylinder head , one on the front of the head (fac-
ing toward the radiator) and one on the driver’s side (facing
toward the drivers’ side fender). Plastic ones tend to crack, metal
ones corrode if the coolant is not changed regularly.

This device screws into
your overflow tank and
monitors levels of fluid in
the tank. Running the
engine without sufficient
fluids can lead to head
warpage and other com-
ponent failure. Engine temperature is important
to monitor and a faulty sensor will not give you
the proper information.
To test the sensor, you need an Ohmmeter.
Remove the two wire connector from the sen-
sor. With the sensors probes in coolant, the cir-
cuit should be closed, with the probes out of
coolant, the sensor should read open. If not
replace the sensor.

RADIATOR FAN SWITCH
These little sensors screw into the radiator and
sense the temperature, when the coolant gets hot,
the radiator fan comes on - or your car gets too hot!
If you don’t notice the fan coming on like you used
to - check this before you overheat!

RADIATOR
HOSE KITS
Radiator Hoses deteriorate over time and it’s very difficult to
determine if they are about to burst. The only absolutely safe pol-
icy is to replace all the “Rubber Type" radiator hoses all at once
every 4 to 5 years. We have complete kits for all popular models.
Some ‘83-92 kits are not complete, they do not include the extra
hoses which attach to the oil cooler.) But you can order the oil
cooler hose kit separately. (See below) Also the upper “T"
Radiator Hose for ‘85-92 Diesels with AC is sold separate (See
below
)

Replacing the heater core in a ‘78-84 Rabbit
®
is not a two minute job but, we called the VW
dealer today and he quoted $375. We can sell
you a heater core for $70. In a Saturday of
work you can replace it. It's a long job (4
hours), but it's not technical, just work. The
Bentley manual has great instructions!
