VW 2.0T diverter valve. The turbo bypass valve is more commonly referred to as the diverter valve in VWs. It is used to send the extra boost pressure back to the turbo inlet pipe when the throttle body closes. If you notice your turbocharged VW is surging, then your diverter valve has most likely gone bad. This is a revised model, that uses a piston instead of the rubber diaphragm to regulate the boost.

The VW diverter valve is responsible for releasing extra pressure from the turbo, back to the intake stream. If you replace this valve and you are not picking up boost like you expect it may be time for a new turbo. The best way to diagnose any problems with your Jetta, GTI, Passat, or any other Volkswagen engine is with a Bentley manual by your side.
