This is Frankincense, our 82 diesel Vanagon. We found him on Craigslist for $600 as a part-out that survived a head on collision with an Explorer (the Explorer didn't survive). The only picture in the ad was a close up of the crashed front end. When we got to Albany, NY to pick it up, we saw that the Explorer missed the radiator, headlights, frame, and bumper. The owner said he drove it home from the accident.
It only had 90k original miles so we towed it back to Grand Rapids, MI and Frankie has now been our daily driver for over 2 years. Last fall he helped shuttle the film crew for "Great Lakes Bad Lines," a fossil free Patagonia environmental adventure documentary on the Enbridge Line 5 from Duluth, MN to Mackinaw, MI, all on straight veggie oil.
We also drive Nausicaa, our 82 Rabbit Pickup, on waste recycled veggie oil.
We recently finished a 1.9na swap into Frankincense to make highway on ramps a little safer for our four kids and a dog. We love long road trips and just made a winter get away spring break trip down to New Orleans, camped along the gulf coast, made it over to Atlanta to visit the grand parents, and back, driving slow for three weeks.
