Axle Boots
These should be checked every 12,000 miles. Swing axle (pre 1968) has two, and CV Joint rear-end has four. The swing axle boot is split so nothing has to be removed, but the CV joint boot is solid and the joint must be loose from its housing to replace. Don't forget the grease!

You've got a '69 or later Beetle and you're going around a curve and you hear a thump, thump, thump or you are starting to pass someone and you get the same thing. You have a Constant Velocity Joint problem. A CV Joint is a hinge. The old swing axle has just one hinge at the transmission, but you have twice as many, one at the transmission, and one at the wheel. The CV Joint allows the wheel to stay planted squarely on the road.
Remanufactured Drive Axles
We have remanufactured drive axle assemblies which includes constant velocity joints, new boots and are reassembled and repacked with grease and are ready for installation. Specify year, side (drivers or passengers) and auto or manual transmission.

Back to the Thump...There is a boot over each joint and nine times out of ten, there is one ripped, and the joint is full of water, rust and dirt. The joint is fitted to either the stub axle (wheel) or to the transmission by Allen Bolts or a bolt that is star-shaped. Buy a 8 mm 12 point Allen Star wrench. You unbolt the joints and replace the one you need using a new boot so this won't happen again. Pack the joint with CV Joint Grease, not wheel bearing grease.
