Beetle, Thing, Super Beetle, Ghia

Front Shocks

Standard Bug and all GHIA. Many people ruin the ride and make Beetles actually dangerous by letting someone sell them "Super Duty" shocks for a Beetle or Dune Buggy front end. A Beetle is so light in front that it must be sprung and shocked lightly. Also check your tire pressure. It should be around 17-19 PSI. Many times we saved people the price of new shocks simply by lowering the air pressure in the front tires. We sell shocks specially designed for a VW.

The old test is still a good one for shocks. When you press down on the bumper, the car should bounce no more than once. The other obvious situation is if the shocks have been leaking oil. The Super Beetles use a strut on the front end. The shock is inside the coil spring. To remove the insert, the coil spring has to be compressed and the strut has to be off of the car. Mark the placement of the strut on the steering knuckle before you remove it and it will save you a front end alignment when you are finished. Spring compressors are pretty common these days, as a lot of American cars with front wheel drive use the same setup. You should be able to rent one easily enough. We sell them, See Index.

We have excellent recycled and new

BALL JOINTS

Other sounds your VW make are when you need new

Ball Joints

There is a clunk every time you go over a bump. The standard Beetle® Ball Joints press in and out so the best method is to remove the torsion arm, held in place by a grub screw, and have someone press in the new one.

Early model Super Beetle ball joints bolt on and off ‘74-79 Supers are pressed in, you have to remove the torsion arm like the rest of us.

We sell the best ball joints. They are made by an OEM in Germany or South America (Be careful-there are some junk ball joints on the market. A customer who bought one elsewhere luckily only had to purchase a bumper, fender and windshield after an off brand ball joint separated in only two weeks) Deal with a specialist. It is Safer!

Steering Damper

Radical vibration in the steering wheel after you go over a railroad crossing or a vibration in the wheel at a steady speed in probably just the Steering Damper. It is a little shock absorber on the beam that takes the bumps instead of the steering wheel.

The steering damper takes the severe vibration, shudder, or jumping back and forth of the steering wheel. We sell COFAB which is OEM Brazil. Good quality.
