MASTER CYLINDERS

Master cylinders are different depending on whether or not the car has power brakes. Almost all cars from 1980 on have Power Brakes. If it has power brakes it is identified as with Power Brakes (W/PB) or without power brakes (W/O PB). All cars built after 1984 have power brakes.

TECH TIP: ABS is only on a few VWs before 1992.  After 1998 is becomes almost universal. If the ABS fails in your car, the brakes revert to the normal mode and will still work.

CALIPER SLIDER SLIP PIN REPAIR KIT

These calipers slide on two pins each. These rust and stick, causing uneven pad wear. One Kit does 2 calipers  which includes new pins, boots, sleeves, pads and lubrication compound.

REAR BRAKE SPRING KITS

Generally you can re-use the brake springs when replacing the rear shoes but if you are rich or just like to do everything right we sell spring kits.  Buy one as a safety measure and return it if you don't need anything.  Adjusters not included.  (1 kit per car.)

REAR WHEEL CYLINDERS

All Rabbit, Scirocco, Jetta, Dasher, Golf  (except Golf GTI and Jetta GLI) use drum rear brakes. They are easy to change for a shade tree mechanic, you don't need a wheel puller. Remove only one side at a time because if you cannot reassemble one, just look at the other side as a sample.

CALIPERS

All front wheel drive VWs and Audis from ‘78-97 use “Kelsey Hayes” style calipers. Kelsey Hayes calipers have no pins, the pads have ears on them to hold them in place.  There is a small anti-rattle spring clip.  Changing the pads takes two minutes after the caliper is freed from the spindle.

The Rear Calipers are a little more complicated than the front. They back in with a twist and a push as opposed to just a push.

Front Caliper Pin & Clip Set

Frequently, you can replace pads and re-use your old pins, but we do have them, if not.
