MAINTENANCE PARTS
When the New Beetle came out in 1998, it was the smash hit VW needed to revive its fortunes here in the U.S. A year and a half later, a redesigned Golf and Jetta showed up, based on the same mechanicals as the New Beetle. These three cars share many of their parts “under the skin,” though the Beetle sometimes requires different parts due to its unique packaging. By and large, these cars have great engineering, some of the nicest interiors around, nice styling and are fun to drive. To accomplish all this and still be able to keep the price relatively “reasonable”, they did have to pinch pennies in certain areas, though. Most of the problems we’ve seen seem to be related to air flow meters, oxygen sensors and ignition coil packs, (all of which cause the “check engine” light to come on) and the window regulators, which seem to fail fairly frequently. Rear brakes seem to wear pretty fast, too. We’re doing our best to identify the problem areas and make sure that we have those parts in stock, so that you can get your car back on the road as soon as possible without breaking the bank. And, of course, we carry all the normal maintenance parts for your new Golf, Jetta, or Beetle!
OIL CHANGES
VW says you can go 10,000 miles between oil changes on the new cars (5,000 miles on the 1.8 turbos) We’ve seen a lot of problems in high-mileage engines due to sludge clogging the oil pump pickup and causing damage to the valve train.
If you’re out of warranty, VW isn’t going to buy you a new engine! Stick with oil changes every 3,000 miles and your engine should last much, much longer. Use a high quality oil and German Mahle or Mann filters.

TIMING BELT
One of the most overlooked maintenance items is the timing belt. The bad part is, it’s not getting any cheaper to repair your engine when the belt breaks. We recently saw a 1.8 turbo head that bent all 20 valves when the belt broke! The valves and lifters alone cost $1,214.99 Which might not have sounded too bad if the cams hadn’t been ruined, too. Another thing to consider: all the 4-cylinder engines now drive the water pump with the timing belt. A seized water pump would break the timing belt, so always replace the water pump when you replace the timing belt.

This filter goes over the air intake for your heater/AC and keeps all the junk you see on the filter above from going into your car and from there into your lungs. Depending on where you live, you should change this filter once every year, more often if you live in a dust bowl.

MAGNETIC OIL DRAIN PLUG
Prevent metal from traveling around your engine in the oil. The magnet in this drain plug will “pull” ferrous contaminant’s out of your oil. Clean it thoroughly every time you change the oil to help reduce wear in your engine.

The oil pumps on the newer 4-cylinder VW’s use a totally different design from the earlier ones. They are driven by a chain off the crankshaft, which does make it slightly trickier to replace than the earlier type.
