Passat ‘98-08

VW brought a completely redesigned Passat to the U.S. market in 1998. The new car was based on the same chassis as the Audi A4, offering much of the performance and refinement of the Audi at a substantially lower price. It’s a great car for the money, but there are a few problem areas. Ignition coil packs are failing left and right, front suspension ball joints seems to wear rapidly, along with wheel-bearings, and we’ve seen a lot of warped brake rotors and unevenly worn brake pads. Replace the timing belt regularly, too. We’ve seen some severe cylinder head damage resulting from broken timing belts.

Bentley Manual

This latest edition of the comprehensive Bentley Service Manual includes information on all the Passat Models including 4 Motion Models and even the new W8 engine! A must-have book if you plan to work on your Passat yourself. Includes a chart of scan codes, which when used in conjunction with the VAG-COM software allows for quick and easy diagnosis of many driveablility problems. 1,714 pages with 4,217 illustrations and diagrams!

OUCH

We’ve been getting a lot of phone calls for cylinder heads on Passat's, especially 1.8 turbo models. There seem to be two main causes-broken timing belts or oil starvation. The solution for the timing belt problem is easy--replace it every 50,000 miles. The oil starvation seems to be caused by sludge building up around the oil pump pickup, clogging it. The good news is that the solution for this is easy, too-Change your oil regularly. If you’ve been going a long time between oil changes in the past, drop the oil pan and clean the oil pump, pickup screen before you have to replace a head!

Pentosin Antifreeze

Unlike most “national brands” of antifreeze, Pentosin antifreeze is phosphate and silicate-free, exceeding all of Volkswagen's requirements, and is neutral to metals, rubber parts and sealing materials. Mix 50/50 with distilled water for best results.

MAGNETIC OIL DRAIN PLUG

Prevent metal from traveling around your engine in the oil. The magnet in this drain plug will “pull” ferrous contaminant’s out of your oil. Clean it thoroughly every time you change the oil to help reduce wear in your engine.

Oil Coolers

These occasionally fail and fool you into thinking  you have a blown head gasket by mixing oil and antifreeze together. If you find oil in you coolant or vice-versa but no other symptoms of a blown head gasket, your oil cooler may be bad. Also, if you spin a bearing or chew up a piston and get metal shavings in your oil, you should definitely replace the cooler, as there is no 100% effective way to flush all the shavings out.

Water Pump

Early 1.8 turbo Passats have the water pump driven by the serpentine belt. Later 1.8 turbos and all V6 models have a water pump driven by the timing belt. Always replace these water pumps when changing the timing belt-you’ve already done most of the labor needed to replace the pump, plus a seized water pump will cause the timing belt to break or jump, causing expensive damage to the engine!

Air Flow Meter

This “sensor” measures the intake air so that the fuel injection brain can adjust the amount of fuel to maximize performance and minimize emissions. When these fail, it causes the “check engine” light to come on, plus it will reduce performance.
