Stop the Yearly Rebuild
Tired of rebuilding your VW diesel vacuum pump every year or two? If you owned a VW Rabbit or Jetta Diesel with the early diaphragm vacuum pump, you probably rebuilt the vacuum pump every two years since 1981 when you bought the car. They’re relatively easy to rebuild; they just have a rubber-like diaphragm; this diaphragm springs a leak, and all of a sudden your brakes are twice as hard to push down. Starting in 1984 VW changed to a rotary, vein-type vacuum pump. As the pump spins, the vein is thrown out by centrifugal force against the inner circumference of the pump and this produces the seal which creates the vacuum. These veins are made of a carbon type material and although they wear down as they rotate, they last virtually forever. These rotary vacuum pumps might last you 500,000 miles without replacement.
These rotary vacuum pumps were, up until now, only available used or from your VW dealer at about $400 each. We found out that VW is still making this style of diesel and still using these rotary pumps in South America. We contacted the OEM supplier and purchased 200 of these pumps at the production price. These pumps are a direct replacement for any VW vacuum pump for any VW diesel for 1977 through 1998. They come in two different sizes, one for a 1.5-1.6 diesel, and the other for 1.9 and early TDI diesels. They look identical but the gear on the bottom and the diameter of the hole into which they fit on the block is slightly different; they are not interchangeable. However, they are totally interchangeable with your old diaphragm style pump.
These things are mounted up under the hood near the wipers. Take about 5 minutes to change, BUT STOP!! Don’t do it like the dealers do. Just change the filter. Park the car near where you can get a vacuum cleaner to it. Take the filter, then the screen, then vacuum out all the dust, beans, and acorns. Blow out the screen with a can of computer (compressed) air then put it back in. Do this every 6 months, don’t bother if you smoke.
True Story!! I bought a 98 Passat 1.8 Turbo wagon, that my wife now drives. (Broken Timing belt) I rebuilt the engine, etc. and also changed the cabin filter, and although this car with 100,000+ miles had been regularly serviced at the dealer the cabin filter had a production date on it of 10/98.
Moral: Change it yourself!!
