Timing Belt: 1.9L Turbo Diesel, TDI (AHU), Jetta, Golf, Passat TDI 96-99.5

VW Diesels are "interference" engines which means the valves and the pistons occupy the same space at different times. The timing belt keeps them in time. Don't bet your engine on a cheap timing belt, especially if it is a diesel. Make sure you only use high quality continental Flennor timing belts. VW recommended changing interval is 30K miles.

Do-it-Yourself Tip

Tension your timing belt correctly so it won't slip and won't be too tight and wear out your pump. Replace your tensioner pulley every 90K miles or 3 years at least. Our tensioner tool allows for precision adjustment. Also, we have cam locking plates (part #3506) and pump locking pins (part # 3507) to make replacing the belt easier.
