Turbo Bypass Valve: Passat 1.8T 98-05

VW Passat 1.8T diverter valve. The turbo bypass valve is more commonly referred to as the diverter valve in VWs. It is used to send the extra boost pressure back to the turbo inlet pipe when the throttle body closes. If you notice your turbocharged car is surging, then your diverter valve has most likely gone bad.

The VW diverter valve is responsible for releasing extra pressure from the turbo, back to the intake stream. If you replace this valve and you are not picking up boost like you expect it may be time for a new turbo. The best way to diagnose any problems with your Passat 1.8T engine is with a Bentley manual by your side.
