DIESEL INJECTION PUMPS
Diesel fuel injection pumps generally are very reliable and last over 100,000 miles. There are three things which cause their untimely demise.
1. Excess tension on the drive belt, pulls the drive shaft against the drive shaft bushing (actually there is no bushing it just rides on the housing) and wears it egg shape. There is then side to side play in the pump shaft. This play destroys the shaft seal and the pump will lose it's prime and won't start after sitting. If you suspect this is your problem, take the return line off of the top of the pump, re-prime the pump and start the car, if it starts right up and wouldn't before, you've pinpointed the problem. For all practical purposes you must replace the pump as this "bushing" cannot be repaired, buying a new housing from Bosch is more than a rebuilt pump. If you can find a Jeri rigged way to re-prime the pump, the car can run in this condition for a long time.
2. Water. The pump is lubricated by the oil in diesel fuel and if a large chug of water gets into the pump and stays there, the pump can be damaged internally.
3. Microscopic dirt particles in the fuel erodes the inside of the pump and cannot hold it's required tolerances. Change your fuel filter often.
Dealer prices are approx. $2,000 for a new pump and $1,100 for a remanufactured. TDI pumps are even more - approx. $3,500 from the dealer!
